Heinke McDade is the founder and President of McDade Travel in Roanoke, Virginia. She has lived in and enjoyed the Roanoke Valley for 35 years after previously residing in Montreal, Geneva, Paris, Brussels, Frankfurt, New York, London, and Kuwait. She was born on a farm in Poppen bull, Germany, about two hours North of Hamburg. After leaving the farm, Heinke graduated from hotel management school in Heidelberg, Germany, after which she left Germany to work at the World’s Fair (Expo ’67) in Montreal. She speaks German and French (and English, of course) fluently. Heinke met her future husband, Neil, in Paris in 1968. They were married in 1972 and lived in several countries before settling in Roanoke, Virginia in 1978 with their two young sons, Ian and David.
In 1985, with the encouragement and support of Neil, Heinke opened her labor of love, McDade Travel. Her favorite travel memories include a safari to Kenya & Tanzania with Tauck Tours and several journeys with Crystal Cruises.
Each year Heinke looks forward to relaxation and renewal during her annual summer visit to beautiful Gleneagles/Glenmor in Scotland. She believes that Gleneagles is an ideal destination for multi-generational families and friends and loves being there with her children and grandchildren.
Heinke’s “McDade Travel family” includes her two additional “right arms,” Karen Hancock and Shelly Peery. Karen has been with McDade Travel since 1995. Karen and her husband, Dennis, enjoy exploring different parts of the world. Her favorite travel memories include a Rhine River Cruise on a Russian ship prior to the demise of the Soviet Union and a Baltic Sea Cruise on Silver Seas. For her next vacation she plans to visit Italy.
Shelly has been with McDade Travel since 2010. She started working in the travel industry as a consultant when she finished college. After many travel adventures with her family, she found her calling in planning travel for clients. As a certified Disney expert she enjoys helping families with their visits to Disney World as well as other family-friendly destinations. Her favorite travel memories include enjoyable lunches at Bridges on Granville Island in Vancouver, British Columbia, as well as a visit to Exit Glacier in Kanai Fjords National Park. And her next vacation? Shelly also looks forward to visiting Italy!
